PM Fasal Bima Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) insures notified crops against yield loss from natural calamities, pests, and diseases, with farmers paying only a nominal premium of 1.5-5% of the sum insured while the government subsidizes the rest, applied for through pmfby.gov.in or via banks.
Required Documents
Step-by-Step Process
Check the Notified Crop and Cut-off Date
Confirm your district and notified crop are covered for the season (Kharif/Rabi) and note the enrollment cut-off date, since PMFBY is compulsory for loanee farmers and optional for others.
Enroll Online or Through Bank/CSC
Loanee farmers are auto-enrolled by their bank at loan disbursal unless they opt out in writing; non-loanee farmers apply on pmfby.gov.in or at a bank/CSC with land and sowing details.
Pay the Subsidized Premium
Pay only your share of the premium - 2% for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and 5% for horticultural/commercial crops - the rest is subsidized by central and state governments.
Report Crop Loss Within 72 Hours
In case of localized calamity (hailstorm, landslide, flood), report the loss through the Crop Insurance app, helpline, or bank/insurance company within 72 hours of the event.
Verification and Claim Settlement
Loss is assessed via Crop Cutting Experiments (CCE) or satellite/drone-based yield estimation, and the claim amount is credited directly to the farmer's Aadhaar-linked bank account.
Pro Tips & Warnings
- Loanee farmers are automatically enrolled every season - submit an opt-out form to your bank at least a week before the cut-off date if you don't want to be insured.
- Keep photo/video evidence of localized crop damage and report immediately - delayed reporting beyond 72 hours can lead to claim rejection.
- Premium rates and the sum insured are fixed per crop and district by the state government - check the exact rate on pmfby.gov.in before enrolling.
