Driving License Renewal
Renew your Driving Licence online through the Sarathi/Parivahan portal up to 1 year before or within 5 years after expiry, with a mandatory Form 1A medical certificate required if you are above 40 (or above 50 for commercial DLs in most states).
Required Documents
Step-by-Step Process
Fill Form 9 for DL Renewal
Go to parivahan.gov.in > 'Driving Licence Related Services' > 'Renewal of DL' and fill Form 9 with your existing DL number and personal details.
Upload Medical Certificate if Applicable
If you're over 40 (or hold/renew a commercial DL), get Form 1A signed by a registered medical practitioner and upload the scanned copy.
Pay Fee (and Late Fee if Expired)
Pay the renewal fee online; if your DL has already expired, an additional late fee applies depending on how many years have passed (up to 5 years, beyond which you may need a fresh test).
Book Aadhaar e-KYC or RTO Visit
Complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC/e-sign where available, or book a slot to visit the RTO in person for biometric verification and photo capture.
Track and Receive Renewed DL
Track your application status on the portal; the renewed smart-card DL is dispatched by post, typically valid for another 10 years (5 years past age 40 for some categories).
Pro Tips & Warnings
- You can apply for renewal up to 1 year before expiry and up to 5 years after expiry without a fresh driving test; beyond 5 years expired, most RTOs require you to retake the learner's and skill tests.
- Above age 40, Form 1A (self-declaration + doctor's certificate) is compulsory even if you feel completely fit - applications without it get rejected at scrutiny.
- Grace-period rules and late fees vary slightly by state, so check your specific RTO's fee schedule before submitting to avoid surprise charges.
