Pay Road Tax Online
Pay your vehicle's road tax (one-time or annual, depending on state and vehicle type) online through the Vahan portal, which auto-fetches your vehicle details using the registration number.
Required Documents
Step-by-Step Process
Go to Vahan's Tax Payment Service
Visit vahan.parivahan.gov.in > 'Online Services' > 'Pay your Tax' and select your state.
Enter Vehicle Registration Number
Enter your vehicle's RC number and the last 5 digits of the chassis number for verification; the system fetches your vehicle class, fuel type, and existing tax status.
Check Applicable Tax Amount and Period
Review the calculated tax amount - private vehicles usually pay a one-time lifetime tax at purchase, while commercial/transport vehicles pay quarterly or annually.
Pay Online and Download Receipt
Pay via net banking, card, or UPI; download and save the e-receipt as it may be required as proof during RTO visits, insurance renewal, or vehicle resale.
Pro Tips & Warnings
- Private cars and two-wheelers usually pay lifetime road tax once at registration, so recurring 'road tax payment' mostly applies to commercial/transport vehicles and vehicles moved between states.
- If you've relocated your vehicle to a new state permanently, you may owe that state's road tax afresh, with a partial refund sometimes claimable from the original state.
- Keep both digital and printed copies of your tax receipt, since some states still ask for it during physical document checks despite Vahan's centralized digital record.
